Course Overview

The BA (Hons) Animation & Visual Effects award has established a national and international reputation for the learning experience that students undergo, and the quality of the graduates that it produces. This reputation has been achieved through a rigorous programme of study designed by an experience award team and diverse approach to the medium of Animation and Visual Effects. It has also been achieved through the excellent facilities available to the students, and a multi-million pound investment in purpose built studio spaces and resources. The award can also boast a high employment rate amongst its graduates.

The course balances the encouragement and nurturing of individual animation and visual effects skills for the auteur and team based production. It allows students the opportunity to experiment with different media as the programme incrementally directs them towards a chosen area of specialism. The course encourages participation with embedded live briefs and international study. Students are also encouraged and often do collaborate with peers from other disciplines such as music, writing, film, TV and illustration making the award truly interdisciplinary. The curriculum is underpinned by theoretical and critical discussions articulated through essays, reports and a dissertation or audio-visual research output. In their final year students also engage with an industry mentor as the course prepares them for either a career in industry or post-graduate education and research.

Alongside the development of animation skills, students can expect to be pushed creatively, covering subjects from traditional art practices such as life drawing, design and visualisation to performance, acting and presentation.

How the course is taught

We want to produce graduates who are highly skilled and creative professionals. We'll identify and nurture your strengths through seminars, workshops and tutorials. Group work features heavily, to reflect how the industry operates. Assignments will often involve live briefs working with real clients.

What you'll do

Year 1

Your first year on the Animation & Visual Effects course will introduce you to all forms of animation and you'll try your hand at 2D and 3D computer, stop motion and experimental animation.

Combining individual assignments and group projects, the aim of year one is to provide you with the skills base and knowledge to produce animation at a fundamental level. Your practice work will be supported by lectures, seminars and workshops taking you through the principles of animation and visual effects, animated film production, drawing, design, storyboarding, character and narrative development, acting and performance as well as the history and theory of animation. Projects will be a mixture of short assignments and comprehensive live briefs, working with professionals from outside the University.

Year 2

In the second year you'll get the chance to choose your pathway in either animation or visual effects. Here it is all about making. In your second year you will be making animation with the ambition of getting it screened in festivals all around the world. On the Pre-production pathway you will produce your animation by working in a production team. On the Post-production pathway you can choose to collaborate with the animators, with live action or create your own short sequence. Your studies are further supported with advanced classes in 2D & 3D CG and an in depth study of contemporary theories and practices in animation and visual effects.

Year two allows you to develop your individual animation practice and build on your own interests and skills in animation. Falmouth is a specialist creative University and there are opportunities to collaborate with students from other areas, such as musicians, writers, designers, illustrators and film-makers.

Year 3

The third year allows you to pitch and produce a major piece of animation or visual effects. Team based productions continue in this year and follow along the pathways established in Year Two. As part of an animation team you will have to produce a three minute film. As part of the visual effects team you will have the opportunity to collaborate with the animators, live action teams or work on sequences of your own.

With support from tutors and visiting professionals, you'll develop an idea from initial concepts into a full-blown animation production in any style or technique you choose.

The third year is supervised and supported by tutors, but does require a large degree of self-direction from students in order to provide you with the skills required to become a professional. Alongside your practice work, you will also write a dissertation about a subject of your choice. You'll benefit from industry mentor support in your final term and will leave Falmouth with a strong showreel of animation or visual effects work and portfolio with the skills to find work in one of the most vibrant and diverse creative industries.
